Q. What did IBM announce at Lotusphere 2004? At Lotusphere 2004, we announced that we are entitling Lotus Notes, Lotus Domino Web Access, CEO Comms and CEO Working Together customers take advantage of a select set of Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing (Sametime) product capabilities. That is, qualified customers are now entitled to use integrated instant messaging and presence awareness functions only, within the context of the Lotus Notes/Domino 6.5.1 (and higher) environment only, at no extra charge.
Lotus Notes, Lotus Domino Web Access, CEO Communications and CEO Working Together customers were previously required to separately purchase "full" Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing licenses to "turn on" the integrated instant messaging and presence awareness feature(s) which were introduced in the Lotus Notes/Domino release 6.5.
How do you turn on Instant Messaging?
Once a customer has installed the Sametime server, and their users have a Lotus Notes/Lotus Domino Web Access 6.5 (or higher) client, they need to configure the user's location document to point to the Sametime server.

Let me open with a quick disclaimer. I realize the official name of the product is Lotus Instant Messaging And Web Conferencing. But old habits die hard, and it will always be Sametime to me. So if I mix up the names a bit and the editor doesn’t catch it, I’ll apologize up front. And with that out of the way…
I haven’t done a lot of Lotus Instant Messaging (LIM) programming. I did a bit of work on an instant messaging (IM) bot used by a consulting company I was with for some time. An IM bot is a program that interacts with an IM client as if the program were a live person signed on to the system. The bot program can be designed to retrieve information based on commands. For instance, for a stock quote, you could enter “STOCK IBM” and the program would return the current stock price from some programmed source. Very cool stuff.

An instant messenger is a client which hooks up to an instant messaging service. Instant messaging differs from e-mail in that conversations happen in realtime. Also, most services convey an "online status" between users, such as if a contact is actively using the computer. Generally, both parties in the conversation see each line of text right after it is typed (line-by-line), thus making it more like a telephone conversation than exchanging letters. Instant messaging applications may also include the ability to post an away message, the equivalent of the message on a telephone answering machine.

Session Initiation Protocol
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is an IETF proposed standard for setting up sessions between one or more clients. It is currently (2004) the leading signaling protocol for Voice over IP, gradually replacing H.323 in this role.
